About Aloe Vera - Its Properties and Uses

Aloe Vera Plant

Native to northern Africa, Aloe Vera is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing to 80-100cm tall, spreading by offsets and root sprouts. Its thick, fleshy, lanceolate leaves are the source for the Aloe Vera Gel which is incorporated into many skin care products. Users of Aloe Vera claim it calms damaged skin and moisturises dry, flaky skin. It is also often used to relieve itchiness.

Aloe vera has a long history of cultivation being grown for many centuries throughout the drier tropical and subtropical regions of the world, both as an ornamental plant and for its medicinal properties.

Medicinal uses

Aloe Vera has been used externally to treat various skin conditions such as cuts, burns and eczema. It is alleged that sap from Aloe vera eases pain and reduces inflammation by virtue of the mucopolysaccharides present in the inner gel of the leaf. The ancient Romans used Aloe Vera to treat infections and skin complaints.

Aloe Vera in shaving products

Aloe Vera sap and other derivatives are added in the manufacture of makeup, moisturisers, soaps, sunscreens, shampoos and lotions, though the effectiveness of Aloe Vera in these produces remains unknown. It is supposed to be beneficial for dry, sensitive skin and eczema. Various manufacturers and brands claim aloe vera has soothing properties, aloe vera is often used in after shave balms, shaving creams and shaving soaps.

The scientific proof of the soothing and healing powers of aloe vera have yet to be seen.

Shaving gel with Aloe Vera can be an alternative to shaving soap. When rubbed into the skin the gel becomes thicker, raising the stubble ready for the shave. It not only soothes the skin (so they say) but acts as a lubricant which helps make the razor glide smoothly over the skin.

Aloe Clear Ingrown Hair and Razor Rash Treatment is a skin friendly roll-on gel that treats skin irritation caused by shaving, waxing and hair removal.
