What is a Shaving Scuttle?

Shaving scuttles were developed in the late 19th century and were used to help generate a hot lather for shaving. They remained popular until after World War I, when more homes then had access to hot running water.

Scuttles were most commonly made from ceramic as this has thermal properties to keep the soap lather warm. Traditional shaving scuttles looked similar to a teapot with a very wide spout and featured an upper bowl with drainage holes to allow water to drain into the base. The heat from the water in the main bowl softened the soap to make lathering up easier. If the spout was wide enough, the water could also used to prime the shaving brush and even heat up the razor.

Many types were made, including occupational scuttles featuring pictures of men’s jobs, hobbies including cricket and football and even popular politicians.

Using the Shaving Scuttle

The shaving brush is dipped into the wide spout, allowing it to soak into the water and heat up. The soap is placed in the soap holder. The brush is then worked on the soap to produce lather; excess water is drained back. This allows conservation of water and soap, while also retaining the heat to ensure a comfortable long shave.

Some brands still manufacture traditional style scuttles including Truefitt & Hill and Geo F Trumper. However, shaving mugs and bowls have grown in popularity and so we no longer stock any traditional shaving scuttles. The best shaving bowls and mugs we stock today are still made from ceramic due to the thermal properties it possesses.
